Diablo OG Kush, also more commonly known as “Diablo Kush” or “Diablo OG” to most of the cannabis community, is an indica dominant hybrid (85% indica/15% sativa) strain created by crossing the insanely popular OG Kush X South African Sativa strains. This dank bud boasts an insanely high THC level that ranges from 16-28% on average and a delicious lemony pine taste and floral lemony pine smell. Diablo OG Kush buds have dense compact medium-sized arrowhead-shaped neon green nugs with a thick spattering of furry rich amber hairs. These nugs are completely caked with frosty white trichomes and a fine layer of sticky sweet resin. Users describe the Diablo OG Kush high as having an immediate onset of a heady cerebral head high that leaves you motivated, focused, and euphoric with substantial waves of creative and inspiring energy. This is followed by a slowly creeping lazy couch-lock that leaves you completely sedated and at ease with significant pain relief in both mind and body. The interesting aspect of this high is that you won’t feel sleepy even though you are sedated and melted into your seat. Due to these effects, Diablo OG Kush is ideal for treating chronic pain, nerve damage, and insomnia.
Bred from Grapefruit, Blueberry and South African Sativa, the Diablo cannabis strain announces itself with a sweet aroma. This indica expresses purple hues in its flowers, along with fruity and spicy flavors. Diablo has an indoor flowering time of 6-7 weeks and took second place at the 2002 BC Harvest Cup in the outdoor category.
Not as sinister as its name implies, Diablo OG is a sativa-dominant hybrid that confers relaxation and mental stimulation. Different phenotypes of this strain have tested at between 15% and 20% THC; as a result, effects are mild to moderate but can become more potent as dosage is increased.
There is some ambiguity around this strain’s parentage. It is commonly thought to be a cross between an OG Kush parent and Diablo, a sativa hybrid created by Canadian seed company Next Generation; the Diablo parent strain (which won the long-running British Columbia Harvest Cup in 2002) is itself a cross between flavorful Blueberry, Grapefruit, and South African landrace strains, giving it the complex fruity flavor that is so evident in Diablo OG. Others claim that Diablo OG is simply a distinct phenotype of the OG Kush-descended Ghost OG; however, Diablo OG’s effects are generally more cerebral than the couchlock typically associated with Ghost and other OGs.
Diablo OG’s appealing taste and well-rounded high have made it a building block for crossbreeding — Southern California’s Riot Seeds has crossed Diablo OG with powerful indica Sand Storm to produce the rare Diablo OG Kush Storm.
When properly cured, healthy buds of Diablo OG are large and dark green. Some phenotypes show traces of purple, the result of high amounts of anthocyanin compounds in the leaves that turn purple when exposed to cold air. Brown to dark orange pistils are threaded through the dense Diablo OG buds. The flowers are covered in sticky crystalline trichomes — this strain’s high resin content makes it a popular choice for the production of concentrates like shatter and butane hash oil. The smell of Diablo OG can be broadly categorized as both flowery and diesel-like; closer consideration yields notes of pine and citrus fruit. Diablo OG also retains the trademark OG hashy, munky undertones.
The smoke is said to be smooth but lung expanding, and to taste sweet with hints of spice and pepper when exhaled. This is a very pungent strain and should be treated as such by both consumers and growers if discretion is a concern.
The Diablo OG strain is one with a murky past and it can be hard to find agreement on how it originated. Many people believe that Diablo OG is a particular phenotype of OG Kushthat was found in a bag of Ghost OG seeds and renamed. While that is certainly possible, the uplifting effects I experienced led me to believe Diablo OG had more of a Sativa influence than other OG strains.
Digging deeper in my research led to a better explanation of the Diablo OG strain’s lineage. It actually is an extremely Sativa-dominant hybrid that is rumored to have been bred by Reseda Discount Caregivers – a collective in Los Angeles. The Diablo OG strain was the result of crossing OG Kush with the Diablo strain, which is an interesting hybrid in its own right. Once I realized the Diablo strain is a combination of Blueberry, Grapefruit, and an unknown African Sativa my experience with Diablo OG made complete sense.
Diablo OG Strain: Long-Lasting, Clear-Headed Anxiety Relief
In most cases I try to reserve OG strains for medicating at night. They are almost always a great way for me to ward off anxiety, but OG strains seem to have the same success rate in putting me to sleep before 10 o’clock if I turn to them early in the day. With that said, I visited VFL Collective in Burbank CA with all intentions of picking up a Sativa to help me focus during the day. The budtender assured me that I wouldn’t go wrong with the Diablo OG strain – she was right.
